Description
My oil painting of Bellever bridge spanning the upper reaches of the East Dart river in the Dartmoor National Park, Devon, UK. The remains of an ancient clapper bridge is just out of sight tucked behind the road bridge....

Bellever is a hamlet in Dartmoor, Devon, England. It is located on the river East Dart about 2 kilometres south of Postbridge. The first mention of a settlement at this location is in a Duchy of Cornwall record from 1355 which gives the name of a farm here as Welford, a contraction of wielle (spring) and ford. However, in his High Dartmoor (1983), Eric Hemery proposed that the name comes from bal (mine) and ford, meaning the mine by the ford. (Wikipedia)....

Thank you very much, Lesley. Your Believer Bridge painting is such a wonderful scene, really typically English and I am rather an anglophile so it is very appealing to me. And no matter where the name Welford comes from, it is already amazing to me that it is possible to go back all the way to 1355 and speculate about its origin.
